Emily West Afanador - Filmmaker Bio
Emily West Afanador started making films in 2006 while acting in the microbudget movie, Spidertron (Soles, 2008). Helping the production crew while off-camera, Afanador earned an associate producer credit on the movie while learning the ropes of filmmaking. Her interest in documentary filmmaking erupted during this time, as she captured on digital video the behind-the-scenes foibles and fun of this DIY, microbudget film company. The hilarious “Fake It ‘Til You Make It” is currently in post-production. Afanador’s filmmaking skills grew tremendously when she entered graduate studies in the University of Oregon’s Folklore program, where documentary production is offered. Trained on the University’s state of the art equipment, and under the tutelage of international award-winning documentary maker, Gabriela Martinez, Afanador realized a particular passion for editing films. Combining Folklore and Gender Studies, Afanador turned her filmmaking attention to Eugene’s independent music scene – a community she knows well through her participation as drummer and singer in several rock bands. In her new release, “Rocking the Boat,” Afanador follows four co-ed rock bands in Eugene, questioning the accusations that rock and roll is a “boys club,” while letting female musicians express the unique challenges they face, even in small town music scenes.
