It’s official! The Board of Lane County Commissioners’ public meeting on October 20th has declared that all residents of Lane County are encouraged to celebrate the month-long festival that is out very own Grrrlz Rock! Eugene Mayor, Kitty Piercy, led the way and Lane County Commissioner Pete Sorrenson followed suite… a unanimous vote resulted in the official proclamation that the month of November is “Grrrlz Rock month” for all of Lane!!
Here (click play video in upper right) is the incredibly long, incredibly boring Lane County Commissioner’s web cast of the meeting. (You can fast forward this video to 1:45h to cut to the chase.) The conversation is a bit hilarious! I don’t want to ruin it for you… you’ll appreciate the formality and basic exploration into language of equality. Yes, it’s true, women really DON’T like to be called girls. That’s belittling. : )
Grrrlz Rock is very proud to accept and thank the Lane County Commissioners support and solidarity!
Q: Will food actually be served on these place settings? for whom are the seats?
A: No. You see, Judy Chicago gathered hundreds of women artists together to do "what women are encouraged to do." They threw a "dinner party" using typically female acceptable art forms such as crochet, knitting, lace, embroidery, pottery, making pretty place settings for a party... But they did it in a way that caused a stir. They made the place settings (plates) in the shape of vaginas. Shocking for the 70's!! (even still shocking.) That'll show them! Lol.
So... The art is the place setting. Rather than a painting or a sculpture. No food will be on it.. Unless that's part of someone's art idea. No one will sit at the table. The First Friday Art Walk folks will walk around the table and view the art just like any art show.
Why vaginas are soo taboo? We all came out of one for Pete's sake!
Other amazing female artists featured within the November's first Friday Art Walk in downtown Eugene:
It was a cold and rainy December evening in the Pacific Northwest. The fire had long burnt out and it was into the wee hours of the morning that Noelle furiously painted on her canvas. Perhaps it was the dreariness of the eternal grey winter that was responsible for such an insane explosion of colors or maybe it was something else...we will never know really and you must ask yourself, do you really want to know? Nevertheless, this was the night the Artimals were born, the night it all began...
Noelle has been painting her entire life and has no plans on giving it up. After years of serious classical oil painting Noelle's offbeat sense of humor and love for animals and all things quirky came through her art strong and true and was not to be stifled. Often the titles of the painting make them even more humorous and both adults and children enjoy the bold colors and whimsical nature of her paintings. Read more about Noelle T. Dass -->>
Three women own Studio Tre Amiche, a gallery and studio where they do their artwork on site and exhibit it there. The space is beautiful, over 4000 sq. ft. at 160 E Broadway (inside downstairs). The November Art Walk is their1st Anniversary!
The name of her show is "Essence of the Soul". Julie is a Mouth Painting Artist and is unable to use her arms, hands and limited use of legs and feet due to a birth defect called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. Julie states the "Painting is my way of dancing: a release of my inner soul". "Holding the paintbrush in my teeth is like a beautiful dance as the strokes of the paintbrush guide the watercolor and gouache across the canvas creating various themes in life.
Julie is the perfect example of a woman that has faced her challenges in life with strength, resolve and beauty. She hopes to inspire others that all things are possible through perseverance and the love for the dance of life.
