Cherry Blossom Musical Arts presents the Cat and Bird Vaudeville Show and Silent Auction on Sunday November 15, starting at 3:30 pm. The event will take place at Agate Auditorium, 18th and Agate Sts, Eugene. Doors open at 3:30 pm with a silent auction of goods and services donated by local businesses to benefit the productions of Cherry Blossom Musical Arts. A free dessert buffet in a cabaret style setting will give everyone a chance to socialize and bid on items before the show starts. Live jazz piano and a few dance surprises will warm up the audience for the Cat and Bird Vaudeville Show, which starts at 4 pm.
In honor of Grrrlz Rock, The Cat and Bird Vaudeville Show features the work of Cherry Blossom's own artistic Director, Nancy Wood, along with the work of 4 fabulous guests, each of whom is a leader in her own right. Darcy du Ruz, Artistic Director of Girl Circus, Opera Diva, and an "old" SLUG Queen, tops the bill, while Portland's Agnieszka Laska lends Eugene her dancers and her sensuous modern choreography. Francia Gonzales, the director of the Circus Arts program at Bounce Gymnastics will treat the audience to her acrobatic skill and beauty. Then Vanessa Martin and her Phenomenon Hip Hop Dance Company end the show with a bang as they throw some electric style into the mix. All this is supported by the guys and gal in the band--serving up the live music of composer Paul Safar.
As the show commences, we join the oddball bird "Yellow Warbler" (Nancy Wood) in her misguided quest to become a cat. Making her way into the feline domain, Yellow Warbler meets up with the Tango Cats (Agnieszka Laska Dancers) and is amazed by their utter sensuousness. Then along comes Miss Kitty (Darcy du Ruz), who has been known to shatter crystal with her stunning high notes. Lurking in an alley, Big Cat (Roger Fountain) juggles circles (and 5 balls) around poor Yellow, with the able assistance of Teen Cat (Simon Waddell). Not to be outdone, The Peacock (12 year old ballerina Stella Verdouw) shows just how beautiful a bird can be. Meanwhile Zen Kitty (Francia Gonzales) tries to fly, as she acrobatically takes to the air. Leave it to our street friends, the Alley Cats (the Phenomenon Hip Hop Dance Company led by Vanessa Martin), to bring it all to a rousing and harmonious finale. All the while, composer Paul Safar and his all-star band, Amadeus 6, keep the action moving with live, original music. Local legend Izzy Whetstine takes on the role of the Old Crow, joined by the young upstarts- Chloe Safar and Gustav Verdouw.
The Band, "Amadeus 6" includes: Paul Safar, Composer, Music Director, piano Ben Farrell, piano and clarinets Craig Bender, flute, saxophones Diane Chaplin, cello Whitney Moultan, bass Andrew Teem, drums and dumbek
The audience is invited to stay after the show to make their final silent auction bids, enjoy more live jazz from Amadeus 6, and chat with the performers! This show is an ALL ages show, so bring the whole family to join in the fun. Suggested donation is $10-15 with kids and Grrrlz Rock pass holders $5. But remember- this event is a community gathering-- so donate what you can, and feel free to join the fun!
