Our Sponsors Rock: Bitchy Betty

November 20th, 2008

bitchy betty is a kick ass social network that let’s you stand up and demand changes big or small. Check it out at www.bitchybetty.org.

***

What is bitchy betty?
Got a problem? Bring it! Lay it all out. What do you want to change about your world? How would you do it? bitchy betty is the platform to define problems, share solutions and find support and comradery.

What is a ‘betty’?
A ‘betty’ cares about what is going on around them. A ‘betty’ is not afraid to speak out when things aren’t right. A ‘betty’ will kick *ss and take action to make things better.  Simply put, a ‘betty’ gives a damn!

Why ‘bitching’?
“Bitching” is not politically correct. It doesn’t need to be polished or eloquent. Bitching comes from the soul; it’s passionate, emotional and authentic.

bitch is a verb. And that implies action. You’re welcome to bitch just to bitch, of course. But the loudest, fiercest bitches come from the soul and inspire others to move. What do you want to change? How are you going to get there? How can your community help?

Is bitching therapeutic?
The life coaches at Life Coaches blog say so:

“Yes! If therapy is defined, as a process that makes a person feel better, then bitching is therapeutic if you feel good after that. So something happens to you, you bitch about it, you let it off your chest and everything is well and good again?”

To me, bitching is synonymous with making oneself seen, heard and felt. The emotions get an outlet. It’s just a part of a therapeutic process. In therapy, there must be a resolution. In coaching, we take it a little further by demanding initiative.”

The key is, after you get it off your chest, move forward and make changes. Take initiative and make the first steps. The betty community is here to help.

What good will it do to just whine about my problems?
bitchy betty allows ‘bitching’ to evolve into something meaningful and positive by allowing other betties to ‘pitch’ their ideas to solve a problem / resolve an issue / help someone cope. bitchy betty is not going to save the world but, we will help to improve the lives of many people by LISTENING, CARING, and ACTING .

Here at Grrrlz Rock! we love it when women are breakin’ out and finding success and fulfillment in typically male dominated environments. Most importantly, we just want you to be YOU and not be defined or restricted by gender norms. “Do yer thang, Grrrl!”

Whether you are a drummer in a punk band, an industrial pipe fitter, a judge or a skateboarder…. we think YOU ROCK! These days, there’s no reason for you to feel alone, even if you are the only grrrl YOU know doing what you love. Remember, there’s always others just like you sharing their experiences on-line within cyber communities. Don’t be shy to Google.

Here on the home page we have a growing blog roll of links that may help ya out. Some of them are resource guides, some personal blogs from Women and Grrrlz just like you. Some of the links explore issues around the topic of feminism. Check ‘em out!

If there’s one you think we should add, just let us know. The more the better!

Serena Markstrom, Music writer and all around kick ass grrrl, has included another story about Grrrlz Rock! in yesterday’s ticket section. This story focuses primarily on the Pacific Northwest Comedy Festival with some additional info on upcoming events in this week’s line-up.

Now in it’s third year, Grrrlz Rock! is gathering some fantastic attention and support from the community. We’ve really got some momentum going on here. It was hard to get the word out the first time around, however. Thanks to the curiosity and interest of Serena and the folks at the Register Guard, we were given a great head start. Serena’s continuing encouragement and dedication to the local music scene has been incredible for Grrrlz Rock! and many others trying to make their way in this town. Serena, thank you! YOU ROCK!

Thanks again to Lane Community College student and kick ass reporter, Scott Hartman for running a follow-up story on this week’s Grrrlz Rock! events. He actualy ran three in this issue of The Torch entitled “Grrrlz Rock in a variety of fashions: Women in Film, Women on Women and Funny Women.”

It’s great to have the support of men out there. Scott also quoted Panel Coodinator, Chris Birke. Whoo Hoo! Go Chris! (pictured on the left).

In addition to the many men performers within the series, there are also a group of  incredibly awesome men who are working behind the scenes. Big thanks goes out Panel Coordinator Chris Birke, Graphic Designer, Brian Hahn, Sound Engineers Lance Miller and Tim Helferty, Recording Engineers Casey and Kevin from Sprout City Recording Studio and Stage Manager, Joel Montoya. YOU GUYS ROCK!

Hey, if you are a guy and you’d like to volunteer to help out Grrrlz Rock! don’t hesitate to ask. We love the help!

YAY! We are stoked that our rad local alternative paper, The Eugene Weekly is doing thier own “This Week’s Grrrlz Rock! Pick.” Last week they picked Suzanne Benorden and Scrambled Ape. This week they picked The Whiskey Spots.

Thank you Eugene Weekly! YOU ROCK!

The Whiskey Spots Singing sweetheart Jamie Jarzemkoski makes the Whiskey Spots, whose old-timey, countrified speakeasy sound comes straight outta the freewheeling ‘20s. From ukelele to washtub bass, saw to kazoo, the jug band instrumentation and Jarzemkoski’s coy, flirtatious vocals invoke Prohibition-era entertainment without the alcohol ban. With Madame Flod, Bajuana Tea, Soulicious and Halie Loren, 9 pm Friday, Nov. 14, Sam Bond’s Garage. 21+. $6. — Sara Brickner
